Kyoto’s famous “Ginkaku-ji”, known in English as the “Silver Pavilion”, is not, however, covered in silver. The name arose by analogy with the famous Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), which is covered in gold leaf. Behind its simple, unadorned appearance, Ginkaku-ji is renowned for the exceptional beauty of its gardens and tea houses, which embody the refined aesthetic of Japanese simplicity.
