Linked by an imposing sacred rope (shimenawa), the two rocks known as Meoto Iwa (‘Married Rocks’), near Ise, symbolise the union and harmony of a couple. Regarded as a symbol of marriage, love and lasting bonds, they are also reputed to encourage romantic encounters and happy unions.
During the two summer months, a magnificent sunrise can be admired between the two rocks.
