In Japan, the famous Chōjū-giga (Animal Scrolls), produced between the 12th and 13th centuries and attributed to Buddhist monks, are regarded as one of the earliest forms of comic strips. The exact reason for their creation remains unclear: were they intended to convey stories to a population that could not read? No one knows for certain. Be that as it may, these humorous scenes, in which animals are depicted behaving like humans, have stood the test of time and continue to inspire artists.
